Virtue

Freedom requires formation.

Virtue is the inner architecture of freedom. A people can have rights, markets, elections, and technology, and still collapse if they cannot govern themselves.

Why it matters

The Western tradition refuses to flatter the unformed self. It teaches that the passions must be educated, habits matter, courage is necessary, prudence is noble, justice is owed, and charity is the perfection of the moral life.
