Reason

Truth can be known.

Reason is the West's confidence that reality is intelligible and that the mind is made to know truth. It is the refusal to reduce life to impulse, myth, propaganda, or power.

Why it matters

Athens gives the West dialectic, definition, argument, proportion, logic, metaphysics, and the ideal of education as the formation of the whole person. Christian civilization did not destroy this inheritance; it purified and elevated it.
